The Eidos International Public Policy Congress 2013 Address
The Eidos International Public Policy Congress 2013, Cape Town, South Africa, February 7th 2013
Speech delivered by Bruce Muirhead (CEO, Eidos Institute)

Eidos is an exercise in innovative and independent networking - completely collaborative at every level. ________________________________________________________________________________ John Howard Introduction Our relatively short history has seen past Australian Prime Ministers emerge as an eclectic bunch, with respective leaders variously painted as conservatives, as atheists, as unionists - as figures who have been revered, hated, idolised and on the odd occasion, largely forgotten. ________________________________________________________________________________ Through the Looking Glass: Mega-trends and Mega-reactions Patterns help us make sense of the world. Frameworks and theories allow us to disentangle meaningless chaos into ordered reality. From the blizzard of information which daily bombards our senses in our information age, finding patterns in our global environment is the equivalent of finding shelter in a snowstorm... ________________________________________________________________________________ From Rhetoric to Reality: Identifying frameworks for change Many would argue, however, that policy seeking to address Indigenous disadvantage in this country has been a series of storms, and none of them perfect. In a speech delivered in 2007 on the concept of collaborative Indigenous policy development, then Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma described policy making in regards to Indigenous affairs as trapping Indigenous people ‘in our own ground hog day’... __________________________________________________________________________________ School of Human Movement Studies, Graduation Dinner

Speech delivered by Bruce Muirhead (CEO, Eidos Institute) In his seminal classic and ode to disaffected youth On the Road, American author Jack Kerouac wrote ‘I had nothing to offer anybody but my own confusion’. This may seem a bit of an odd statement to be offering to you at the end of three years of a university education aimed at building your knowledge and preparing you for your chosen careers... __________________________________________________________________________________ |
